My daughter will be in college next year, but this early we are scouting for universities where she can take an entrance test. I am a product of a state university and I wish my daughter will be able to enjoy the benefits of studying in one, including the subsidized tuition fee. I still remember paying less than $15 every semester. I’m also looking at this state university in Quezon City. Hubby and I wish that we can send one (or both) of our children there. I’m reading related information about this school and I’m glad that one of my friends whose daughter is studying in the same university is generous to share tips on how we can prepare for the entrance test.

I’m also considering other schools in Manila and checking on their websites and affiliate program to know the schedule of their entrance test come June or July.

The idea of teaming up with my daughter came when we were discussing about potential source of income for our family. I told her that I can provide the materials that she needs while I’m leaving up the designing to her. We’ll probably ask around to know what design is popular or appealing to young people. My daughter is also willing to accept portrait design from clients. If someone wants to add the image of backwoods cigars to the design, he doesn’t have to buy backwoods cigars for reference; we have the internet as vast photo source for the image.

My daughter’s friend on Facebook requested her to draw Jimmy Page. I don’t know anything about Jimmy Page until I read about him on wiki. James Patrick “Jimmy” Page, is a musician. He is an English guitarist, songwriter, and record producer.

It’s surprising for a young girl like my daughter’s friend to admire a popular heavy metal rock band. Jimmy Page founded Led Zeppelin, the English rock band that popularized “Stairway to Heaven” in 1970s.

Page began his career as a studio session guitarist in London. And for sure he must have used several types of guitars, including axl guitars in his entire singing career.

Just learned today that hubby is a big fan of Led Zeppelin.

Too much heat can make dogs uncomfortable and if you are not aware could lead to their untimely demise because of heat stroke.

Experts suggested simple tips for dog owners. Always provide a clean and cold drinking water to your pet. You can spray cold water on their belly where the fur is thin or place a wet towel around his body to cool his body temperature down.

As for our pet Oreo, I let him wade in a makeshift bathtub using a laundry basin.

Oreo is not the cuddly type because he’s quite big for a mixed breed dog. We allow him to roam around the front yard, but if we have enough space we could have bought a dog run so it won’t be much of a hassle to put a leash on him whenever a visitor comes over.

If you are living with two rowdy little boys (like my nephews), sleep is one of the things you will sorely miss and might just be one of your biggest problems, too! I don’t know what it is about taking a nap and going to bed early that put them off, I am only sure that whenever those times arrives, my nephews will find clever ways to do many a number of things other than sleep. It seems like a nap or sleeping early at night are two activities they’d rather trade for something else, like sleeping is a sure waste of time. It won’t matter whether their grandmother had the air-conditioning on during the hot summer days or even when their granny get them each an electric mattress pad during the colder months, they would almost always drop sleeping in favor of other activities they deem more worthwhile to do. Boys!

Edgar Degas is one of the best-known Impressionist artists to come out of France at the end of the nineteenth century. He is famed particularly for his paintings and sculptures of ballet dancers. He had close links with the ballet performers at the Paris Opera Ballet and his works depict them in rehearsal, in performance and at rest.

Biography

Degas was born in Paris in 1834 to an upper middle-class family. He excelled at his studies and showed great promise in art. He attended the School of Fine Art in Paris, where he perfected many of his techniques. He left the college, though, because he wanted to experience the world and his travels took him to Italy, where he spent time in Naples and Rome. After three years of learning and drawing he returned to Paris. He joined the National Guard, then went to the United States where he visited family in New Orleans. It is here that he began his study of dancers. On his return to Paris, he became involved in the Impressionism movement. He painted many portraits during this period which are highly regarded today. By the end of the 1890s, his eyesight was failing and he became reclusive. He died in Paris in 1917.

Degas and the Ballet

Degas’s links with ballet are so strongly forged that it is difficult to separate his art from it. His works depicting ballet dancers are widely copied in terms of form and composition. There was no doubt, however, that the ballet was Degas’s perfect medium and it was very lucrative for him. The paintings are technically brilliant and they have been copied by many other artists. There is real dynamism in his paintings and he used a wide variety of techniques and materials.

Degas’s painting ‘The Rehearsal’ is considered one of his greatest. The rehearsal is in full swing and is the middle distance. The construction of the painting is more like a photograph in that it is not posed and is merely a record of a particular point in time. The notes he made on this painting show his precision in terms of placing people and limbs and how he made continual adjustments.

Degas’s love of ballet, according to the art critic, John Berger, came from the fact that he saw it as something that mirrored the human condition. Berger recognised that the steps and postures of the dances are similar and appear to be quite formalised in structure but there is also still a sinuousness in each of the dancers’ movements. Degas also liked to use pastels because it gave an impression of light and air within the ballet.

Sculpture

In the 1870s, Degas began to experiment with making sculptures in bronze. Once again, ballet dancers feature heavily in his output, though he also did sculptures of horses. He liked to put real clothes on his statues, which heightened the sense of reality. He was not afraid to divest his dancers of glamour and showed them as they really were. However they are depicted, it is true to say that his statues are dynamic in their composition as they often show the dancers in a position of change.

When it comes to ballet there is no artist who has captured the glamour, the hard work and the ethereal beauty of it more than Edgar Degas.
